Visitors will be flocking to the Gardeners’ House this summer, as throughout the month of August, we’re running our very first Bird Month – a season of talks, workshops and creative activities inspired by the wild birds who can be seen across our landscapes.
At the heart of Bird Month is a special collaboration with Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital, whose century of work caring for Cornwall’s seabirds and garden birds deserves a proper celebration.
Our collaboration with Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital
Throughout August, we’ll be hosting an exhibition in support of the work of Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital. This a chance to find out more about the birds they care for and the difference their work makes across West Cornwall, while visiting the Gardeners’ House.
Alongside the exhibition, we have a full day of activities planned with Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital on Friday 14 August:
- Creative Art Workshop,10am-12pm: A family-friendly session making a magical bird with artist Mae Voogd, inspired by this month’s theme of birds.
- Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital Talk, 2pm-3.30pm: Learn about the fascinating and vital work of the Hospital since the 1920s, its heritage and its future, including how we can all support and live alongside seabirds in our local villages and towns. The talk finishes with a Q&A with members of the Hospital team.
- The Bird Sisters: A Century of Care and Compassion Audio Documentary, 6pm- 7pm: Nestle up in the Lab to listen to this new audio documentary telling the story of Dorothy and Phyllis Yglesias, the sisters who founded Mousehole Wild Bird Hospital.

Bird Month beyond the collaboration
Bird Month runs beyond our week with the Hospital, with events taking place through the whole of August:
- Treneere Fun Day, Saturday 8 August: We’ll be at the Fun Day with bird-themed arts and crafts to take home.
- Make a Peg Bird Friend, Tuesday 18 August, 10am–12pm: A drop-in craft session making a peg bird friend from recycled materials, with our Creative Volunteers.
- Love Your Birds with John Matthews, Wednesday 26 August, 10am–11am: A short talk and Q&A on how to help wild birds in your garden, with John Matthews from Last Resort Bird Rescue. For all ages.
- Make a Bird Water Station, Wednesday 26 August, 11am–12pm: Following straight on from John’s talk, learn how to make a water station for the birds visiting your own garden, and learn what to do – and what not to do – to help them.
There’s something on for every age and every level of bird enthusiasm this August. Full details, times and booking for all Bird Month events are on our Events page.
