What’s On: Our Summer Events & Workshops

Jun 4, 2026

Summer is buzzing at the Gardeners’ House, and we’ve got a packed programme of events to take you from the secret lives of moths to the ancient art of oak gall ink. Whether you’re a curious family, a keen gardener, or you are looking for something a little different to do, there’s something here for you.

Collections Care Talk: How to Spot and Prevent Insect Pests Thursday 11 June, 2:30–3:30pm | Pay what you can: £1, £3, or £5

Join our Collections Manager Emily for a fascinating look at the insect pests that can damage historic buildings and collections — and learn practical prevention techniques you can use at home too. A brilliant talk for anyone who loves old things and wants to keep them that way.

Tool Sharpening Workshop (in collaboration with Friends of Morrab Gardens) Thursday 18 June, 1:30–3:00pm | £1–£5 | Up to 5 places

Keep your garden tools in top condition with this hands-on workshop led by volunteer Thomas. Bring your own secateurs and gloves — and come ready to get stuck in. Places are limited to five, so book early. All funds raised support Friends of Morrab’s care of Morrab Gardens and their bulb and seed fund. Please note this session is not suitable for children.

Moth Talk & Trap Friday 19 June, 6–8pm | Pay what you can: £2–£10

Step into the secret nighttime world of moths with expert Dr Phil Sterling. After an engaging evening talk, we’ll be setting moth traps out in the sensory garden to capture the summer moths of Morrab. The perfect start to a very special moth-filled weekend.

Moth Breakfast Saturday 20 June, 8–10am | Pay what you can: £2–£10

Don’t worry — we won’t be eating moths! Join us for tea, coffee, and pastries as we release and identify the previous night’s moth catch together. Local artist Mel will also be on hand to help you create your own beautiful paper moth to take home. A truly magical morning.

Paper Moth Making Drop-In with Mel Saturday 20 June, 10:30am–12pm | Free (donations welcome)

Missed the Moth Breakfast? Mel’s paper moth making session is open to everyone as a free drop-in. All welcome — whether you’re a moth enthusiast or just fancy making something lovely.

Free Family Film Day Saturday 20 June, 10am–2pm | Free drop-in

Pop into the Gardeners’ House for a cosy, family-friendly film experience. We’ll be showing a loop of short films in support of this year’s Refugee Week. Come and go as you please.

Two hands are held out clasping art materials relating to the gall ink workshop

Foraged Ink: Create Your Own Botanical Oak Gall Ink Thursday 25 June, 2–4pm | £15–£19

The use of oak gall ink dates back to the fifth century, and now you can try your hand at making it yourself. Join us to discover the wonders of wild, botanical colour and go home with your very own bottle of locally-foraged ink. Limited to just six participants.

Mazey Day Calm Creative Space Saturday 27 June, 10am–2pm | Free drop-in

Looking for a calm corner away from the Mazey Day crowds? Head to the Gardeners’ House for a family-friendly, chilled-out creative space. A lovely little haven in the heart of the celebrations.

Can’t make it to one of these? Don’t forget, every Saturday morning from 10:30am to 1:30pm, Sustainable Penzance’s PackSwap drop-in runs as usual. Bring your unwanted plastic packaging (bubble wrap, postal tubes, bags, and more) and take what you need. It’s free, it’s friendly, and it makes a real difference. They’re based at the Gardener’s House
