Welcoming architecture students to the Gardeners' House

The Gardeners' House project team welcomed a group of architecture students from the Architectural Association School in London in January.

The students were on a field trip to Cornwall, visiting a variety of projects and meeting with residents, architects, and local communities to understand the challenges of regeneration faced by Penzance.

Albane Duvillier, course leader from the Architectural Association School with Elliot Rogosin, brought the students to meet Miki Ashton, project director at The Gardeners' House and Neil Wall, architect for the project.

Miki said: "We are always delighted to welcome visitors to the site and to talk to them about our regeneration of this building which would otherwise have been lost. We have exciting plans to share it with the people of Penzance and celebrate the stories of our community and the landscape around us - and we loved being able to share our plans with the visiting students."

The field trip formed part of a design unit for second and third year architecture students. It is part of the students brief to investigate the connections between landscape, materials and community buildings.

Albane said: "It is amazing for the students to understand some of the challenges faced by people when leading such a project. Our unit encourages an interest in resilience and common good, while looking at landscape and materials and The Gardeners' House is a wonderful community project to explore this."

Their BA(Hons)Intermediate Programme leads to a ARB/RIBA Part 1 qualification and allows students not only to broaden the horizons of how architecture is physically manifested in the world, but also to holistically consider how cities are designed, to imagine a future for the environment and to redefine how we want to live together.
