Explore Penzance with the new Beat the Street game

Mar 18, 2026

Our friends at Active Cornwall have created a free, fun, walking, cycling and wheeling game – it encourages everyone to get outside, discover their town and enjoy time away from their screens. It’s called Beat the Street, and everyone playing will be able to scan a card over Beat Boxes at lots of different points around Penzance. Scanning your card allows you to collect points – and points mean the chance to win prizes!

There will be a Beat Box in Morrab Gardens – a beautiful place to explore, offering a calm green space filled with sub-tropical plants. With a cast iron band stand, fountains and ponds, this historic spot is much loved by the community of Penzance. Don’t forget to scan your card at the Beat Box when you visit.

You can play as an individual, create a team with your friends and colleagues or join your school team and you could win loads of great prizes. Mounts Bay Academy and Humphry Davy School have been talking to their pupils about it, so there may be teams to join at school.

They have created different versions of the game for different towns – and the Penzance game is live now and runs until 6 May 2026.

How to play

  • Create your Beat the Street account on our website at beatthestreet.me/penzance or by downloading our Beat the Street App via Google Play or the App Store.
  • Add family members, and register a card to player profiles. Set up a team or join an existing one.
  • Start your journey. Find your nearest Beat Box using our paper or digital map and hover your card at the contactless Beat Box until it beeps and flashes. If playing with the app, tap the Beat Box icon on your phone and swipe to collect points.
  • Visit two Beat Boxes within an hour and collect 10 points for each Beat Box – this is 20 points for the journey.
  • Carry on your journey. Score 10 points for each extra Box you visit.
